A poetry snippet suddenly came to me last night as I was drifting off to sleep. I was able to open my eyes and write the line down for later use. The first thought that came to me after I closed my eyes was Helios, the Hellenic god of the sun. Whether there is a link, I'm not sure. Do people still worship Helios? I haven't found many references in the major Hellenismos sites, though he is often mentioned in passing.
It was:
His name is sunlight upon my lips
& fire through my veins.
I'm not really big on divination, but I think I just might do a Tarot reading tonight. I feel something, some sort of energy lately and I'm not sure what it's about. It's possibly connected with my (sort of) sudden interest in ancient Rome. Then again Helios is Hellenic, not Roman...maybe it's Sol instead? I don't know. I'm hoping I'll get some answers, rather than more questions and confusion.
I came across Sappho's poems and one reminded me of Helios:
(Thou burnest us) Ὄπτιασ ἄμμε.
And here's the Orphic Hymn to the Sun:
HEAR golden Titan, whose eternal eye with broad survey, illumines all the sky.
Self-born, unwearied in diffusing light, and to all eyes the mirrour of delight:
Lord of the seasons, with thy fiery car and leaping coursers, beaming light from far:
With thy right hand the source of morning light, and with thy left the father of the night.
Agile and vig'rous, venerable Sun, fiery and bright around the heav'ns you run.
Foe to the wicked, but the good man's guide, o'er all his steps propitious you preside:
With various founding, golden lyre, 'tis mine to fill the world with harmony divine.
Father of ages, guide of prosp'rous deeds, the world's commander, borne by lucid steeds,
Immortal Jove, all-searching, bearing light, source of existence, pure and fiery bright
Bearer of fruit, almighty lord of years, agile and warm, whom ev'ry pow'r reveres.
Great eye of Nature and the starry skies, doom'd with immortal flames to set and rise
Dispensing justice, lover of the stream, the world's great despot, and o'er all supreme.
Faithful defender, and the eye of right, of steeds the ruler, and of life the light:
With founding whip four fiery steeds you guide, when in the car of day you glorious ride.
Propitious on these mystic labours shine, and bless thy suppliants with a life divine.
A personal journal of random musings, posts and whatnot on a wide range of topics and aspects of my life. If you want to know more about my interests, check my profile. If we share more than one interest, are part of the same groups and/or you sincerly want to get to know me, than friend me. If you want to collect friends, act in anyway racist, sexist, or just a plain asshole (for no legit reason)-- don't bother.
The title of my journal comes from a poem by Paulo Neruda:
Yo quiero que despierte
la luz encarcelada:
flor mineral, acude
a mi conducta:
los parpados levantan la cortina
del largo tiempo espeso
hasta que aquellos ojos enterrados
vuelvan a ser y ver su transparencia.
XII
I want the light
locked inside to awaken:
crystalline flower,
wake as I do:
eyelids raise the curtain
of endless earthen time
until deeply buried eyes
flash clear enough again
to see their own clarity.
